ATM Security
Facts
The European ATM Security Team (EAST) reported that during the period from January to June 2008, ATM Related Fraud Attacks (Card Skimming, Card and CashTrapping, Transaction Reversal) rose by 143% compared to the same period in 2007. Total reported losses during that period was USD $338.22 million. An increase of 118% from the same period in 2007.
EAST also reports that ATM Related Physical Attacks (Ram Raids, Gas Attack Explosions, ATM Burglary, Robbery, Vandalism) rose by 6% from January to June 2008 when compared to the same period in 2007. Total losses reported during that period was USD $21.12 million.
Between 2005 and 2007, Australia suffered nearly 200 ATM Raid Attacks, with each attack costing an average of AUS $120,000 in damages alone — cash losses and expenses related to damage to the ATM are not included. ATM Gas Attack Explosions are now prominent in Australia.
The upward trend in ATM attacks is being mirrored across the globe including the Americas, Asia and the United Kingdom. The global economic downturn has increased the need for increased ATM security, provided a case for reviewing risk exposure and implementing new risk reduction measures.

ATM Security - A Measured Approach
The goal of ATM Security is to build consumer belief and faith in the ATM channel.
Security enhancements for the ATM channel should be viewed as a whole which entails a decisive and calculated approach.
Security measures for ATM networks today is more than just fitting alarms and electronic locks.Insufficient or otherwise ineffective physical ATM security subjects banks and financial institutions to increased exposedness.
Banks, financial institutions, ATM manufacturers and Independent ATM Sales Organisations across the globe are investing in more effective and intelligent security systems for their ATMs.
Guaranteeing that account holders personal information cannot be compromised and establishing measures that enhance the customer's safety at the ATM are rising concerns for the ATM industry as a whole.
Too many institutions wait for an ATM crime event or breach of security to implement security initiatives and devise a risk management plan.
